A tower of dense smoke could be seen for miles.
The truck driver escaped and no one else was hurt, said Fire Department spokesman Ken Bohan.
The truck overturned shortly before noon on the six-lane Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Queens. Authorities did know why the truck overturned.
Part of a temporary overpass being constructed over the highway fell onto the truck, but there was no immediate indication if it was knocked down by the truck or was affected by the fire.
The truck was carrying 8,000 gallons (30,000 liters) of diesel fuel, said Jarrod Bernstein, a spokesman for the city's Office of Emergency Management.
Highway traffic in both directions was halted and service was suspended on the nearby No. 7 subway line, reports AP.
