Road and rail traffic in southern France are slowly restoring to normal after violent storms hit the area overnight.
The French weather service, Meteo-France, predicted more rain Wednesday in the Gard and Herault regions along the Mediterranean coast but lowered its color-coded warning system from the highest level of red to orange.
Two main highways, the A9 and the A54, opened early Wednesday morning. Around 50 smaller roads remained blocked in Herault, however, and two major routes in Gard were unusable.
France's national rail operator was checking tracks Wednesday and was due to progressively reopen train lines. It had halted service between the towns of Nimes and Narbonne.
French rescue workers had evacuated hundreds of people Tuesday as heavy rains lashed the region.
Authorities called in more than 300 rescue workers from neighboring regions to help with the evacuation and flew in half a dozen helicopters to support a possible rescue effort in the area, which last suffered deadly flood two years ago, the AP reports.
