Clinton aides said doctors believed she had a &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/mailbox/22/101/397/14494_arafat.html ' target=_blank>stomach virus. She fell ill about five minutes into her lunchtime speech, said Erie County Democratic Chairman Len Lenihan, who was at the Women's TAP fund-raiser at a private club.

Clinton left the podium and continued speaking from a chair, then said she needed a break and left the room, Lenihan said. She returned to the podium a short time later but fainted before resuming her speech, reports Indianapolis Star.

Vincent Tracy, manager of the Saturn Club, where the event was held, said Clinton was surrounded by aides after fainting. He said she remained seated for five or 10 minutes, then rose and thanked the audience.

"I saw her walk out the door by herself, she smiled and said 'thank you'," he said.

"It wasn't as dramatic as it sounds," Clinton told The Associated Press. After leaving the club, Clinton proceeded to Canisius College where she delivered a speech on health care.

The speech had provoked controversy beforehand because some abortion opponents objected to her appearing at the Catholic college in Buffalo given her abortion rights views, informs Newsday.
