AIDS, resurgent malaria, falling food output, deteriorating shelter conditions and environmental &to= english.pravda.ru/main/2002/09/27/37371_.html ' target=_blank>degradation have put Africa "far off track" toward achieving the 2015 Millennium Development Goals. This was the finding of the United Nations Millennium Project which presented its report to UN Secretary-General &to= english.pravda.ru/main/2002/05/06/28300.html ' target=_blank>Kofi Annan on Monday. Climate change could further worsen Africa's situation by increasing food insecurity, spreading vector-borne diseases and increasing the likelihood of natural disasters, the report said. The &to= english.pravda.ru/mailbox/ 22/101/399/14706_christmas.html ' target=_blank>Millennium Development Goals ambitiously aim to halve extreme poverty and "radically improve" the lives of at least one billion people in developing countries by 2015, tells Xinhua. In the next decade, more than 500 million people could escape from poverty and tens of millions could avoid certain death if the United States, Japan and other rich countries kept their promises to vastly increase development aid to the world's poorest countries, a UN-sponsored report said Monday. The report spells out the investments needed to meet UN goals adopted by world leaders at the &to= english.pravda.ru/usa/2001/06/04/6878.html ' target=_blank>Millennium Summit in 2000 to tackle poverty, hunger and disease mainly in African and Asian countries, where one billion people live on about $1.20 Cdn a day or less and 1.8 billion more live on just $2.40 a day. "The overwhelming reality on our planet is that impoverished people get sick and die for lack of access to basic practical means that could help keep them alive and do more than that - help them achieve livelihoods and escape from poverty," said Sachs, who heads the Earth Institute at Columbia University. As an example, he said, providing nets to cover beds and keep out mosquitoes in impoverished African and Asian countries could save the lives of a million children this year who otherwise will die from malaria, reports CBC News.
