The training sailing ship Nadezhda (registered with Russia's sea port of Vladivostok), which is making a voyage around the world, left the Solomon Islands for Hong Kong on Thursday. She is scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong on February 24.

The ship left Vladidovostok on January 25, 2003, the press centre of Vladivostok's State Marine University told RIA Novosti.

The voyage is devoted to the 200th anniversary of the maiden round-the-world voyage of Russian seamen. Seamen led by Ivan Kruzenshtern and Yury Lisyansky sailed around the world in shallops named Nadezhda and Neva. The modern Nadezhda's route replicates the route of that historical voyage.

A team of researchers is travelling along the crew and cadets, studying environmental problems and processes in the global ocean.

The sail has covered over three quarters of the overall distance. It will have to cover another 5,000 miles before it returns to Vladivostok, which is to take place late in March.

The ship visited St Petersburg via the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the Suez Canal and the Atlantic, which was the first phase of the voyage.

The travellers took part in St Pete's tercentenary celebrations and headed for Britain, then to the Canary Islands and further on to Brazil, the Falklands, Chile, Tahiti, the Fiji and Solomon Islands.

The ship will call at the ports of Hong Kong, China, Japan and South Korea at the final phase of its voyage.
