Pavel Bure wins little money at court for being soccer hooligan for British Airways

The Moscow City Court ruled to collect 67,000 rubles (about $2,800 or 1,400 pounds) from British Airways in favor of Russian hockey star Pavel Bure. Bure sued BA when a pilot of the airline refused to allow Pavel Bure on board as he took Bure (known as the ‘Russian Rocket’) for a football hooligan.

The court has thus dismissed appeals from both the airline and Bure, whose defense tried to increase the sum of the fine.

In the meantime, British Airways withdrew its apologies to Pavel Bure for forcing him out of the plane in October 2006 at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport . In addition, spokespeople for BA claimed that Bure was intoxicated with alcohol during the incident.

On October 31, 2006, Pavel Bure had to spend a whole day waiting for a next flight when a pilot of the plane he was supposed to fly on refused to take off with Bure on board. Bure took legal action against the airline demanding 20 million rubles (about $816,000) to compensate his moral damage.

The court ruled to collect only 67,000 rubles ($2,800) from Biritsh Airways. The claimant, however, considered the fine was a ridiculously small amount and filed an appeal to raise it. The latest decision of the court dismissed the appeal.

Bure’s lawyer does not intend to give up. “We are currently considering an opportunity to file another lawsuit against British Airways taking into consideration the fact that it revised its previous position in connection with the incident,” lawyer Dmitry Ragulin said.

Pavel Bure (born on March 31, 1971 in Moscow, USSR) is a former professional ice hockey player. He was a right winger and played in the National Hockey League (NHL), as well as for the Soviet Union and Russia internationally. He won a bronze medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and a silver medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. During his career in the NHL, he played for the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and New York Rangers. Currently, Bure serves as the General Manager for Russia's Olympic hockey team.
