Marthe Jocelyn wins Canadian Children's Literature Award

Marthe Jocelyn, a writer who has also designed clothes and toys for kids, has won the first-ever TD Canadian Children's Literature Award for most distinguished book of the year. Jocelyn, who lives in Stratford, Ont., received the prize for Mable Riley, a story of a young girl and her sister living in Ontario in 1901.

The award, worth $20,000, was created last year as part of TD Canadian Children's Book Week, which is at the beginning of November.

This year's judging panel included a children's author, a bookstore owner and a librarian.

The French-language winner, who will also receive $20,000, is to be announced Nov. 8 in Montreal.

The other English-language finalists were: After Sylvia by Alan Cumyn, Airborn by Kenneth Oppel, Peg and the Yeti also by Oppel, Red Land, and Yellow River by Ange Zhang. A.M.
