Antibiotics - bad treatment for sinus infections

A new study shows that antibiotics are useless in treatment for sinusitis, an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, but rather breed drug-resistant bacteria.

Sinusitis is know as one of the most common complications of the common cold or flu, but the most important thing to remember is that the symptoms are mostly caused by a virus and not by a bacterium.

It means that, presumably, there is no point for sinus patients (about 80 percent in U.S. and 72-92 percent in Europe) in receiving either antibiotics or placebo.

Researchers claim that an overuse of antibiotics may lead to increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics.

Best advice is to wait and see if it’s really an infection or just like symptoms.

The most common symptoms of sinusitis are headaches, pressure in the eyes, cheeks and nose, nasal congestion with thick nasal secretions, cough and fever.
