Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday promised to ensure equal access to the state media for all major political forces, news agencies reported.

At a meeting with leaders of both houses of parliament and the main political parties, Putin also said he would allow parties which win regional elections to put forward their candidate for governor. Regional governors are appointed by the president.

"This decision should increase the role and influence of parties in society," said Putin.
