Indian director Yash Chopra will serve on the jury of the Berlin International Film Festival next month, Indian newspapers reported Thursday. Chopra said the festival would also feature a special screening of four Indian films including the Bollywood blockbuster "Parineeta - The Married Woman," which has won several awards in India.
"It is indeed a delight to be given this honor," he told the Mumbai Mirror newspaper. Bombay, India's entertainment capital, is also known as Mumbai. British actress Charlotte Rampling heads the jury at the festival that will run Feb. 9-19.
Chopra said while millions of South Asians watched Indian films across the world, the movies should be shown to a global audience. "A lot needs to be done. We need to get non-Indians to see our films," Chopra told Bombay-based DNA newspaper. "We need to screen them in the best cinemas worldwide." Chopra has made some of India's landmark films since he directed his first movie in 1959. His most recent movie "Veer-Zaara" released last year was a love story between an Indian pilot and a Pakistani woman set against the backdrop of hostility between the two South Asian neighbors, reports the AP.
