World-renown Russian pianist and composer Evgeny Svetlanov died in Moscow last night at the age of 74. He had been the lead conductor of the Bolshoi orchestra for many years and the artistic director of the State Symphonic orchestra since 1965. Born in Moscow in 1928, Svetlanov studied at the Gnesins' music institute and the Moscow Conservatoire. He was awarded the title of the USSR People's Artist, the highest honour in the country. Svetlanov won the Lenin award and many national and international contests.
