The journalist from al-Hurra channel was gunned down in the city of &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/world/2003/03/26/45086.html ' target=_blank>Basra. His eight-year-old son was also killed.
Al-Hurra was set up by the US in 2004 to compete with pan-Arab stations like al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya.
Meanwhile, gunmen have abducted a senior Iraqi Interior Ministry official in southern Baghdad, according to an unconfirmed report.
Correspondent Abdel Hussein Khazal, and his son, Karar, were shot dead as they left their house at 0900 local time (0600 GMT).
As well as working as a correspondent, Mr Khazal was the head of the press service at Basra city council and a member of the Shia Dawa Party, reports BBC News.
According to Reuters, Abdul-Hussein Khazal was killed when several gunmen attacked his house, police said on Wednesday .
Alhurra is an Arabic-language satellite station set up with U.S. funding last year in an effort to compete with other Arabic satellite channels like Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya. It is based in the state of Virginia.
In a seperate attack on Wednesday, gunmen abducted a senior &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/cis/2003/03/04/43975.html ' target=_blank>Iraqi Interior Ministry official, dragging him from his car in southern Baghdad.
The official, Colonel Riyadh Katei Aliwi, worked in the ministry's operations department, the ministry said.
Dozens of foreign and Iraqi journalists and officials have been killed in Iraq since the &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/columnists/2003/03/26/45103.html ' target=_blank>U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.
